Gina's Letter to Parents

Dear Westside Parents and Community Members,

This week certainly let us know we are approaching the beginning of winter! The rain was a welcome sight to help with the statewide drought, but rainy days are always different at school. The sleet reminded us that it can get really cold in the Antelope Valley, but it sure looked a bit like snow for just a while.  And today is another beautiful day in our Valley with bright blue skies, a hint of wind and crisp air.

December 17, 2021

Tomorrow, December 17th will be our final day for the first semester, and at the conclusion of our minimum day (an hour earlier dismissal), our schools will be closed until January 10, 2022 for Winter Break. Our principals also provided an update about school bus transportation via a dialer message today making you aware that all buses are expected to run late for pick up time tomorrow. We hope that you and your family have a safe, enjoyable and wonderful vacation.

Progress Reports and Assessment Scores

During the week of December 21st, please check your mail for your children’s first semester progress report, NWEA results for the testing that took place in December, and for 4th/5th graders, the result of the assessment for GATE (Gifted and Talented Education). These items will be shared with you so that you can see the progress they have made through the first half of the school year. The combination of progress reporting and assessment data will allow the classroom teacher to monitor the progress being made by your children not only in the class but also by the growth shown on the assessments as well. Should you have any questions or concerns about either measures of progress, please contact your children’s teachers.

K-3 Reading Intervention Program

A new session of after school intervention classes to improve reading performance for our students will begin after Spring Break. Parents of students who are recommended for the program will be contacted to enroll. Our first session with students produced some promising improvement results, so we are looking forward to continuing to help more students improve their reading skills. If you have any questions about the program, please contact your children’s teacher or the school principal.

Board of Trustees Meeting

The next meeting of the Board will be held on Tuesday, December 21st with the public session beginning at 6:00 p.m. This is the required annual reorganization of the Board in which new officers are elected, membership and committees are determined and ByLaws and policies are readopted. There will also be presentations from the recent CSBA Annual Education Conference. The agenda can be found on the District’s website

COVID Screening

When your children return to school in January, we will be discontinuing the use of the STOPit SafeScreen. When you get ready to take your children to school, however, you need to do your own self screening for each child to ensure that they comply with the health requirements to be in school. Prior to the reopening of school in January, we will repost the health questions that must be addressed daily.  Thank you for your cooperation and assistance.

Winter Break

As mentioned above, schools will be closed for Winter Break from Monday, December 20, 2021-Sunday, January 9 2022. Schools will reopen on January 10, 2022. The District Offices will be closed from Friday, December 24, 2021-Sunday, January 2, 2022. Offices will reopen on Monday, January 3, 2022.

Cyberbullying (updated December 22, 2021)

The District recognizes that students utilize social media or text to communicate with their peers. Parents are encouraged to have a discussion with their children regarding the importance of appropriate online citizenship and the consequences of cyberbullying. When school reconvenes on January 10, 2022, the District may consider discipline against any student who has engaged in cyberbullying during the Winter Break. Thank you for your assistance in helping your child make wise choices about online communication.

I am hopeful that you will enjoy the upcoming time away from school to spend time with your family and friends celebrating the holiday season, traveling, spending time together or many of the other things that a long break affords time to do. We sincerely appreciate the opportunity to work together with you as we meet the learning needs of your children and we watch the growth they are making to meet the goals for their grade levels. Thank you for your support and cooperation throughout the challenging past few years, and please stay safe and healthy during the break. We will look forward to the return of your children on January 10, 2022.

Happy Holidays,

Regina L. Rossall
