- Community and Parents
Dear Westside Parents and Community Members,
As I write this letter today, we are experiencing a typical Antelope Valley spring weather day. Monday was warm and not windy, yesterday was cold and windy and today the Antelope Valley spring winds have shown up in force! However, we were pleased to welcome back our 6th grade students today and to share some news regarding the return of our moderate to severe special needs students at Gregg Anderson Academy, Hillview Middle School and our preschool programs.
At a special meeting of the Board of Trustees last night, Memoranda of Understanding with Westside Union Teachers Association were approved, paving the way for the special needs students to return effective Monday, April 19th. Parents with students returning to school will receive specific instructions from the school principals about the schedule, drop off, pick up, and any applicable transportation information. We are pleased that we could accommodate parent requests for both in person and distance learning as our schools have reopened.
Also, the Board of Trustees approved the use of the NWEA as the annual assessment for our students this year. Our students will have completed 3 administrations of this assessment to measure their academic progress throughout the year, allowing the Board to waive administration of the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) for the 2020-21 school year. With the exception of 5th and 8th grade science assessments and administration of the California Alternative Assessments (CAA) for students with moderate to severe disabilities which may still be required, our students have completed their annual assessments for this school year.
The school calendar for the 2021-2022 school year has been posted to the District website. Some of you have requested that information for planning purposes, and it was recently approved by the Board of Trustees. At this time, barring any further health and safety setbacks, it is anticipated that school will return to more normal operations in August. In preparation for the reopening, registration has opened for students, transfers will be taken until tomorrow April 15th for those who may want their child to attend another school in the District. All registration and transfer forms are available on the website and can be returned electronically. Please be sure to visit the website for more information.
Please feel free to join regular meetings of the Board of Trustees each month. Agendas are posted on the website for your information. Our next meeting will be Tuesday, April 20th. Some members of the Board will attend in person from Hillview Middle School (this will be our first partially in-person meeting since last June). The Community can join the meeting via YouTube with the information posted on the agenda.
As we move to spring, planning is under way for the revision of the Local Control Accountability Plan, which will include the programs and services supported with state funds. Opportunities for feedback and input in the planning is open to all stakeholders on the following dates:
- Superintendent's Advisory - April 27 at 4:00 pm and/or May 25 at 9:00 am
- District English Language Advisory Committee - May 14 at 10:00 am
The meetings are held via Zoom and you can request the link to attend by contacting Ed Services Department via Let's Talk.
Some of you have asked about promotion events for our middle school 8th graders. Our principals are working through the details in accordance with the LA County Department of Public Health guidance. More information will be provided as planning moves forward.
Again, thank you for your patience and understanding as we’ve moved from complete closure to hybrid reopening. This year has been a challenge for us all, and your partnership has been most helpful. Welcome back to the 4th quarter of the year.
Regina L. Rossall
