Someone's Hero Team Cottonwood

Welcome to the 2016-2017 year at Cottonwood School. Thank you for a remarkable last year. I am thrilled to be returning as your principal. I am looking forward to working with you, and our outstanding staff, to make this year the most memorable and positive learning adventure yet for your children.

Our theme this year, illustrated above, is all about embarking on a hero’s journey as we follow our “call to adventure” to re-opening in fall 2017 as a STEAM (Science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) school of choice. We will remain focused this year on providing an exceptional educational program that engages the whole child in learning the California standards in Math, English Language Arts and Literacy in History/Social Studies, and Science through the innovative approaches of design thinking and Project Lead the Way (PLTW). Students will engage in robotics, coding, and media arts; and programs such as Fast ForWord/Reading Assistant for intervention. We are also proud to be newly AVID certified and will continue using AVID’s college/career prep strategies to help kids achieve all that they can.

As you walk on to campus, you will see that phase one of the campus modernization project is complete! The staff and I are so excited to welcome your children into new state-of-the-art classrooms. Each classroom is equipped with new LCD projectors and interactive whiteboards. K – 3 have access to iPad or Chromebook carts and we are introducing our 1:1 Chromebook program in 5th and 6th grades this year. The technology upgrades are wonderful but it is your children that are at the heart of our school. As the next phase of buildings take shape, we remain focused on providing a supportive culture where students are building up tools of critical thinking, creativity, determination, hard work, a positive mindset, and good social skills and habits to achieve academic and personal success.

Recognizing that parents remain the most significant factor in a students’ success, I also encourage your active involvement and participation in our school community. Parents are welcomed and encouraged to volunteer in classrooms and share in shaping our school’s story by being actively involved with the Parent Teacher Association (PTA), School Site Council (SSC) , English Learner’s Advisory Committee (ELAC), West Antelope Valley Education Foundation (WAVE), and other school and district committees.

Thank you for allowing us to work with your children. The staff and I look forward to an extraordinary year with your child and family at Cottonwood.
