Joe Walker’s Associated Student Body elective class is an integral part of many of Joe Walker’s activities and programs. It is an active student government that plans and funds a number of activities from dances to guest speakers and assemblies. All ASB officers campaign and are elected, and must maintain a 3.0 GPA throughout the year to remain an active member.
AVID is an international program that prepares students in the academic middle for admission to a four-year college or university by learning study skills, critical thinking and problem solving. This elective class includes college and career planning, college visits, guest speakers, and weekly tutoring from peers and college students.
FIRST Robotics is an extra-curricular competitive team that prepares throughout the school year to participate in several local and state competitions. This year we will be participating in the FIRST Robotics Program. FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is a worldwide organization that focuses on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math through local, regional and world robotics competitions. FIRST is designed to recognize the wide variety of skills that students possess. While FIRST focuses on robotics and technology it also requires knowledge of scientific facts and concepts. FIRST emphasizes the scientific process, research and applications. This ensures that everyone can participate
In this elective class students will learn about robotics and build robots for VEX Competition. VEX Robotics encourages teamwork, leadership, and problem solving among groups. VEX Robotics is the only robotics platform that spans from elementary school through college.
