Masking Updates for School Employees

All school employees must wear surgical-grade masks (also referred to as medical procedure masks) or higher level PPE (e.g. KN95 or N95 respirator masks).

For those wearing surgical masks, double masking, with a cloth face covering worn over the surgical mask, is recommended for enhanced protection. Cloth face coverings alone are no longer acceptable, as they do not provide the same level of source control or personal protection as a proper surgical mask or higher level PPE.

Full compliance with this directive is expected to occur no later than two weeks after the post-holiday reopening date of the school or district.

All staff are also required to wear masks outdoors on school campuses, except when eating or drinking, when in crowded outdoor settings where distancing cannot be easily and reliably maintained.

Announcements

As always, the safety of our students and staff is of the highest priority.  Unfortunately, the latest variant of COVID has once again spread rapidly across our county.  While we anticipated receiving promised at-home COVID tests for our students from the Los Angeles County Office of Education, at this date they have not been delivered.  Based on the communication we received yesterday, they may be delivered late next week, but will not be received this week.  Rest assured that as soon as we receive the tests, they will be distributed at each school site.  Testing is not a requirement at this time, but we know many parents want the opportunity to administer the tests to their children.

For parents who want the assurance from their children receiving a negative COVID test prior to the start of 2nd semester, the District will make available PCR tests.  From 8-11 am on Thursday, January 6th at the Maintenance and Operations Facility located on the District Office Complex, 41910 50th St. W, Quartz Hill, staff will be available to help with testing which is on a walk-in basis.  Once the testing session is complete, tests will be sent to a lab for processing and parents will receive the results via email from the lab.  The results are usually received within 48-72 hours.  Again, testing is not being required for students to return to school, however, parents have asked about providing testing especially since the over the counter tests will not arrive before Monday.

The rain was a welcome sight to help with the statewide drought, but rainy days are always different at school. The sleet reminded us that it can get really cold in the Antelope Valley, but it sure looked a bit like snow for just a while.

December 17th will be our final day for the first semester, and at the conclusion of our minimum day (an hour earlier dismissal), our schools will be closed until January 10, 2022 for Winter Break.

During the week of December 21st, please check your mail for your children’s first semester progress report. A new session of after school intervention classes to improve reading performance for our students will begin after Spring Break.

When your children return to school in January, we will be discontinuing the use of the STOPit SafeScreen.

The District recognizes that students utilize social media or text to communicate with their peers. Parents are encouraged to have a discussion with their children regarding the importance of appropriate online citizenship and the consequences of cyberbullying. When school reconvenes on January 10, 2022, the District may consider discipline against any student who has engaged in cyberbullying during the Winter Break.

Thank you for your continued support and cooperation throughout this first quarter of the school year.  While we are learning to manage the COVID-19 related issues, your patience has helped us to implement the ever changing health directives as expeditiously as possible.  It has also helped keep our focus on ensuring that our students continue to learn, while also addressing the social-emotional needs created by this unprecedented time.
